Hello, I’m back!

I extended my break to take in the Labor Day weekend and now I’m feeling pretty dang refreshed. I relaxed, saw lots of people, and gained some perspective on, you know, life. I did knit a little too…

Knitting on the Aran Cardi continues. I held it up to Thunk’s torso yesterday evening and it appears that I’m about 1/3 of the way through the body. I’m having a nice time with this one so far. It’s a very relaxing knit…the cables are easy to memorize and hey, no body shaping!

Aside from a little more knitting on the Pomatomus socks, and some sisterly birthday knitting on the mysterious white project (which I did NOT finish in time for the birthday deadline, and STILL haven’t finished, because I am a bad sister) I didn’t really accomplish much in the crafty realm. I did figure out a few other things though:

1) I love my new brother-in-law. I have the best family ever. You should all be very jealous of me.

2) Vacation is lovely, even when it rains and there are biting flies.

3) I’ve had an epiphany about the whole Christmas knitting thing. This year, I’m not going to knit something for everyone I know. I’m not joking. I know I said it last year, but I really mean it this time. More to come on this topic.

4) It seems that the combination of autumn-like weather and having the carpet shampooed can trigger an insane cleaning, organizing, trashing and donating binge. Curious about how that worked out?

Ok, this apartmental overhaul has been a long time coming. Do you remember the weekender bag? It has been sitting out since May, as I have no room ANYWHERE in my apartment to store it. Seriously, we’ve been at maximum capacity for a while. Do you know how hard it is to put anything away when there is nowhere to put it?

To make a very long story short, I tore into the place. I’ve done this before, and usually it results in me getting that “I’m half way through going through all the crap in the closet but I’m totally burned out and just want to shove it all back in” feeling. Then I shove it back in and I’m pretty much back where I started. No more! I’ve thought this through and I’m pretty sure I’ve solved the problem.

It’s very simple.

1) Go out and get some DVDs of your favorite TV show* (ok, in my case it was old videocassettes of Ally I taped off of the TV in college).
2) Pull everything out of the closet.
3) Reorganize your fanny off until you get that overwhelmed feeling.
4) Go watch an episode and knit a bit.
5) When it’s over, go back reorganize a bit more.
6) Do the knitting/TV thing again. Maybe watch two episodes if you’re feeling particularly burned out.

Repeat as often as necessary until your closet/room/treehouse/whatever is clean. Trust me, you want to try this. I feel like all I’ve done is watch TV and knit all weekend, but somehow I managed to reorganize the complete disaster which was my bedroom. It’s like a miracle or something.

*don’t get a show you haven’t seen before (especially one with cliffhanger episodes, like Alias). We don’t want anything that you could get potentially sucked into, obviously.

P.S. Yes, I know that this probably won’t work for people with actual lives, but there have to be a few others out there like me, right?

I'm like you. I love knitting to shows I've seen before. I can't tell you how many times I've watched my Buffy and Angel dvds. It's good because even if I have to look down a lot, I have practically memorized what happens in the shows and just listening to the dialogue is enough to follow along.

We did the cleaning/sorting/donating thing this summer, only a little bit differently. A year after moving into our house, we still had a bunch of unpacked boxes. We took everything out and dumped it all over our living room, popped in some dvds and watched/listened while we sorted it all out. We ended up donating 3 garbage bags full of clothes and shoes, along with our old stereo system.

Glad you had such a nice vacation! And got your house cleaned. You were busy. I'm like you, too, with the knitting, cleaning, and watching TV. It's all about finding the perfect blend. The new cardi's looking great, too.

Lovely pictures.

And thank you for the cleaning/organizing tips. I came back after the long weekend feeling like I must reorganize my place in a very dramatic and scary way...but had no idea where to start.

You've inspired me! :D

Welcome back! I totally need to clean. I can relate to the whole, "maximum capacity" thing. You know it's bad when you have to twist your body around a curve, stand on a fishtank (don't ask) and *throw* to get stuff to fit in a closet.

Cardi looks great!

Hey elli!!
How are you? It looks like you got some sun on your vacation! Miss you!
(and love the knitting!)

Brilliant idea! I have only ever got as far as your old cleaning self, and sometimes the amount of disorganised stuff I have makes me cry. Your genius regime sounds like a good way of putting in place some kind of 'actual life', without living in constant fear of stashed fabric and too-big-but-much-loved clothes falling on your head at any hour of the day or night.

Welcome back! Good to see you had a wonderful time.

And here I thought I was the only one knitting to VHS cassete tapes (recorded off the TV) of Ally McB!

You know me and to top it off you MISS ME!!! HEE,HEE- it's going to be COLD here is Flagstaff, hint, hint. I'll take a pair of socks, thanks.

:)) hugs,

The sweater looks amazing! I'm always late with knitted gifts I'm making for my sisters--every time!

Looks like you had a fantastic vacation... it's always good to get away and come back refreshed! The cardi looks great too :)

wanna come over and clean my house? :) cute cardigan, where did you purchase the yarn? (online?)

glad you're back.

yeeeah... i'm definitely gonna need to knit the aran cardigan also. freaking awesome it is.

I loooove Ally McBeal - even though the last few seasons sucked. Watched it religiously in law school. Yay! on the organizing. Just be glad you have a bedroom to tackle and not two bedrooms and a huge garage. The knitting and sister look great, too. I'm glad you're rested and happy.

House cleaning and vacationing and knitting. That is just about near paradise for me.

Welcome back from the holy land!

I've been lurking on your site for a little while, but I had to come out of anonymous-ville to ask you, what yarn are you using for your Pomatomus socks? It looks so pretty! (The socks look so pretty too!)

The Aran Cardi looks gorgeous. It's making me rethink the stash of that yarn I've got languishing around here. Can't wait to see its progress.

I love hydrangeas. They look so pretty in your sister's bouquet.

HA! This was a great post. I love your organizing shpiel. That sounds like it just might work. Our apartment is at max capacity, too. Fortunately I am somewhat obsessed about getting rid of things we don't use often, and I literally make a trip to the Goodwill donation box like, once a month. It sounds like you actually had fun cleaning, though!
I love the Aran cardi so much...it's going to look great on him. And I really like the color a lot. And the Wedding picture is *gorgeous*. They look so happy and serene. Big congratulations to you and your sister.

i love your new brother-in-law too.
